New Band Students

To Future Band Students/Parents/Guardians

Welcome to Mount Carmel School Band Club! Please browse through the following information for joining MCS Band Club as a new member.

1. You must be a MCS student, 5th grade or above. 4th grade and under cannot join the band…(Sorry!)

2. You must be able to come to practice at least 2-3 days per week between 3-3:30pm except for Wednesdays.

3. You must be responsible and respectful. Responsible…communicate with Mr. Greening, practice your music etc. Be respectful to Mr. Greening and other band students.

So…prior musical knowledge is good to have but NOT necessary. Majority of students joined without any music knowledge. Mr. Greening and advanced band students will support you in learning how to read music and play instrument.

Band club activity day/time for beginning band students:
The band students are required to participate in a daily practice which will meet every weekday except for Wednesday between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm at the band room (Advanced band students will stay until 4:30pm). The band students are required to attend practice at least 2-3 days per week (Mondays and Fridays are mandatory practice days). Please make sure to pick up the students by 4 pm (within 30 minutes after the practice). There may be some Saturday practices especially before the performance day.  The student can be excused from the practice if the student/parent notify the director with the reason (dental appointment etc.). The student may be dismissed from the band if not meeting the attendance requirement after a warning.

Instrument preparation:
As for the instruments, there are few instruments available to lend (Percussionist will not require to buy an instrument). It is recommended to purchase a new instrument with a reliable brand for the student’s future improvement. Please make sure to try out the instrument before deciding on the instrument. Parents can buy the instrument through Mr. Greening or online. Please kindly discuss with the band director (Mr. Greening) before purchasing an instrument.

Instrument Assembly, Care, and Maintenance:
Proper assembly and care are necessary to minimize repairs and frustration caused by a malfunctioning instrument.
Please understand that parents are responsible for damages caused by student’s neglect or abuse to school instruments.

It is very essential to practice outside of school in order to develop skills faster. Daily practice is recommended but school work has more priority over instrument practice. At least 10-15 minutes per day is recommended for daily practice for beginning band students.

Following is the list of instruments in beginning band (Few school instruments are currently available. Please contact the director for availability.)
